HAND ROLLED ROSE CHALLENGE

I recently saw this beautiful piece on Pinterest.  I would never use it as a throw rug, but this idea could be used in so many other ways!
I'm working on something along these lines.   What a great way to use scraps!  I've made a lot of hand-rolled roses over the last year or so.  I've used book pages, tissue paper, felt, wool, chiffon, cotton, and burlap.

Just think of the beautiful table runner that could be made with a combination of fabrics made into roses and other flowers.

What would you do with this?  What fabrics would you use?  All the same?  A mixture?  On the floor?  On a table?  On the wall?  What a fun project - time consuming, but fun!
So, that's what I'm doing!

Speaking of fabric roses, with a drawing on March 20th, there are only two more days to sign up to win my
Spring Rose Pillow.

June Roses (and Snapdragons and Fuschia and Salvia . . .)

June is National Rose Month!
After a very long winter, and a cold, wet spring, it's about time we see some flowers in the garden.  But, it's been chilly and wet all the way into the third week of June this year.  While everything else in the garden is struggling to show off, the roses are not about to let the weather stop them!  So, until my garden becomes a little more photo-worthy, these hardy blooms will have to do.

Sweetheart Roses from a Mother's Day plant from my son.

Snapdragons and Salvia in a little silver creamer that was handed down from my grandmother.
Last, but not least, some Fuschia and Honeysuckle in a fabulous ice bucket that was a real thrift store find.  It's not silver or even silver-plate, but it's the next best thing and for only $3.99!  It feels like silver, is weight-y like silver, but it's something else.  The information on the bottom calls it "Silver Glamour" and all I know is that it is extremely shiny and mirror-like and it does not tarnish!

Here are some ideas for things to do to Celebrate National Rose Month:

-Host a garden party for your gardening friends.
-Visit a public rose garden near you.
-Send photos of your roses to friends and family (or blog about them)!
-Gather your favorite rose photos and create a coffee table book to
give as a gift to someone who can't get out and enjoy them.
-Create your own special postage stamp celebrating your own rose garden.  You can create them here. Expensive, but nice for a special occasion!
-Take a shut-in to visit a rose garden near you.
-Give a rose plant to a nearby nursing home.
-Take a bouquet of roses or other flowers from your own garden to special friends - just as a way to show them how much you appreciate them.

Happy Rose Month!

Paper roses and lampshades

It was a beautiful, snowy, January day in Wisconsin.
The snow fell all day long, nothing crazy, just soft and gentle.

I couldn't resist comparing today's view . . .

to the view from last August!
Anyway . . .
Our plan for today was to jazz up some lampshades with paper roses - just in time for Valentine's Day. They turned out just beautifully. Vellum, cardstock, and drawing paper . . . everyone had their favorite, each one is unique, and they all turned out so well! Here are some pictures of how the day progressed.
Supplies are ready!

To make the roses, you cut out a circle, then cut the circle into
a spiral. Then, starting at the outside of the spiral you just roll,
and roll, and roll, and roll!

It takes a while, but you end up with a pretty little ranunculus . . .

Which look a lot like the real thing!

Beautiful!

Jan made some beautiful hot pink roses out of cardstock.

Gwen made hers out of vellum.

And my ranunculi are made out of drawing paper.

My lamp before . . .

and after!
Such a fun, snowy day to create flowers and
memories with some very dear friends!

Here in Wisconsin, we need those little reminders that
spring is right around the corner - or so.
And here is Gwen with a surprise gift for me! She is a partner in
crime with a coming project since it was with her help that I was
able to get a very large and heavy treasure home from Goodwill
the other day. She knew I was going to be needing these. Now
I can't wait to get started!
